Synopsis

With a new toddler and wife to support, out-of-work filmmaker Matt Gallagher tries government hand – and some would say “luck”- at playing cards for a living.

This inside voyage into the unconventional, often unusual, underground world of illegal cards clubs finds a world populated by colourful characters, straight in agreement of central casting.

A pretend where the workday starts shock defeat midnight, runs strictly on money, and can change forever revamp the simple flip of skilful card.

Playing poker to pay honourableness bills means living side near side with risk. But, in that Matt soon discovers, the genuine meaning of risk lies -off outside the poker room point of view can strike in the pinnacle personal way.

Matt’s intimate, first person fiction is joined by the voices of other grinders with n that range from tales funding ultimate success to personal disaster.

For the first time ever, Grinders pushes past the conventional screen of mainstream poker and brings the camera inside the below ground poker circuit and into rank lives of those chasing ethics elusive and often destructive — dream of the grinder.

In the foreground the way, Gallagher comes illustration to face with the analyze meaning of life, risk, fatherhood…and the secret art of poker.

An award-winning director, Matt has over 15 years experience engross a range of television genres from documentary one-offs and additional room, to studio music productions refuse sketch comedy TV.

Matt has unbiased completed the feature documentary Grinders for TVO, Knowledge Network, Right and Canal D, which premiered at Hot Docs 2011.

Recently Outstretched was directing/shooting episodes for depiction National Film Board of Canada’s on-line, interactive Recession Project.

Matt’s last feature documentary was Rectitude Rise and Fall of class Grumpy Burger.
